A Minute of Your Time

(1 Minute messages from God’s word)

These can be read on the radio, used in bulletins, or sent out in e-mails.

1) Hi! My name is Mike from the Susquehanna Valley church of Christ in Selinsgrove. Could I have a minute of your time?
I would like us to look at Genesis 1:1 today: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Isn’t that an amazing statement to contemplate? As we look at our surroundings, and even at our selves with an honest heart, we can see that surely there is a Creator. We know that something can’t come from nothing, don’t we (Heb 3:4). Let us think of our Creator each and every day, and try to learn more about him in the Holy Bible. Psalm 19:1 says: The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. The creation shows us that there is a God. His Holy word shows us who this God is and what he expects from his creation.

Today let’s look at the last sentence in Genesis 1:16: He made the stars also. Almost as an afterthought, five little words in the Bible make reference to the innumerable celestial bodies we call stars. Man takes so much pride in the things he makes and yet thinks nothing of disregarding the Almighty God who “made the stars also”. Let us consider together Psalm 147: 4-5: He counts the number of the stars; He calls them by name. Great is our Lord, and mighty in power ; His understanding is infinite. Do you know this God who “calls the stars by name”? He knows you. He calls to you through his word, the Holy Bible (2Thes 2:13-15).

Let’s consider Genesis 1:27 together today, shall we? It reads So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Isn’t that beautiful? How precious is the life of each individual person. We are blessed with reasoning, emotions, creativity, and most of all, with an eternal spirit. Also we are created with the ability to choose. How much more alive and able to experience our emotions are we with the gift of choice. God could have made us obey him but he wants us to choose to love him - just as he has chosen to love us.
Would you like to talk more about God and his love for you? - I hope so. If you do, why don’t you contact us at the church of Christ at 743 - 1533 or go to our web site at www.svchurchofchrist.org We would love to hear from you!

4) Could I have a minute of your time?
Genesis 2:24 reads: Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Here we have God’s establishment of the marriage covenant. From the beginning God has desired for marriage to be the inseparable joining of a man and woman for life (Mark 10: 7-9). Wouldn’t it be a better world if we all took marriage vows a lot more seriously - before - and after we get married? To love as God loves, to be as faithful as God is faithful, and to forgive as God forgives, is an example that will take us far in our marriage relationships.
Would you like to talk more about God and his marriage plan? - I hope so. If you do, why don’t you contact us at the church of Christ at 743 - 1533 or go to our web site at svchurchofchrist.org. We would love to hear from you!

Let’s consider together Genesis 3:4 Then the serpent said to the woman, “you will not surely die. Herein lies the basis for the troubles of man throughout all the ages - the doubting of God’s word. In our text, Satan has planted the thought into Eve’s mind that just maybe God was wrong. Previously, God had said that they would die if they ate the forbidden fruit. She bought into Satan’s lie, partook of the fruit, and brought spiritual and physical death into the world. However, God’s word can still show us the way back to eternal life for those who obey.

Today let’s zoom in on Genesis 3:21 Also for Adam and his wife the LORD God made tunics of skin, and clothed them. What a loving, gracious God we have. After Adam and Eve sinned against God, he covered their shame instead of annihilating them. Note how it cost at least one of the animals their life as it’s blood was shed for Adam and Eves transgression. Here we find the first animal sacrifice in the Bible. God’s justice demands a payment for sin. Gods mercy supplies that payment (Genesis 22:8). One day he supplied the ultimate, once for all sacrifice in his Son Jesus.

Could we look at a very short, interesting passage today? Gen 5:24 reads: And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him. Hebrews 11:5 sheds light on this passage as it shows us that because of Enochs faith, God took him directly from this life to the next, without experiencing physical death. This shows us that their is something beyond this life here on earth. Did you know we can have the hope of going where Enoch went? Oh, we will most likely experience physical death first, but, because of Jesus we can be "taken up by God" to live eternally with him after death.

We try to be upbeat, don't we? But sometimes we have to look head on at some issues. Today is one of those times as we look at Genesis 6:5, and part of vs7 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. So the LORD said "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth," The judgement of God is severe and sure. Yet where we see his judgement, his mercy is not far behind. Faithful Noah and his family were spared. One day God's final judgement will befall the earth. But again his mercy will be present, all those found "in Christ" shall be spared.

To emulate someone is to imitate them. Noah is a good person for us to emulate. Genesis 6:22 Reads: Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did. Can you imagine the disastrous results if Noah decided to change, or "tweek" God's instructions just a little, while building the ark? Sadly, many religious people do that today. They change God's instructions on salvation. They pay little heed to what His word says and make up their own plan of salvation. Let us be like Noah of old and "do all that God commands us".

Let’s consider together Genesis 8:22 While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, Cold and heat, Winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease. God spoke this after His great flood had reconstructed the earth. His blessings of everyday providential care upon his creation would be continuous until the end of time. Every cycle of day and night, every change of season, and every blessing of sustenance, should remind us of God and His keeping of his promises. His greatest promise is that of salvation to all who are lost (John 3:16).

Last time we spoke, we spoke of a wonderful promise God had made. Another promise of God is found in the last part of Genesis 12:3 as he spoke to Abram, who later was called Abraham, And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. This magnificent promise was fulfilled in the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ (Acts 3:24-26). Jesus’ lineage can be traced back to Abraham (Luke 3:34). Through Christ, “all the families of the earth”, can have the greatest blessing of all - eternal life.

12) Hi! My name is ___________ from the Susquehanna Valley church of Christ in Selinsgrove. Could I have a minute of your time? Today I would like to direct your thoughts to Genesis 19:26, But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. The LORD had just destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their wickedness. God did not want Lot’s family looking back and longing for those evil ways (Genesis 19:17, Luke 17:32). Urgency requires diligence. As God calls us through his word to serve him, we must look ahead, holding on to his promises, and not looking back to the world and it’s evil ways.
Would you like to talk more about God and your commitment to him? - I hope so. If you do, why don’t you contact us at the church of Christ, at 743 - 1533 or go to our web site at www.svchurchofchrist.org

13) Hi! Could I have a minute of your time?
Let’s look at the birth of Isaac in Genesis 21:1-2, And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. Back in Genesis chapter 15 , Abraham and Sarah knew of the promise God made to Abraham concerning his descendants, and even though they were childless, the scripture says Abraham believed God that he would have children. In chapter 16 however, we see where they try to force God’s will and Abraham has the child Ishmael to Sarah’s servant girl. However, God came through in His time in chapter 21, and brought forth the child that the nation of Israel, and the Messiah, would spring from.

14) Hi! Could I have a minute of your time?
Let’s look at Genesis 22:1-2, 1)And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, [here] I [am]. 2)And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Would you - I hope so. If you do, why don’t you contact us at the church of Christ, at 743 - 1533 or go to our web site at www.svchurchofchrist.org

15) Hi! My name is ___________ from the Susquehanna Valley church of Christ in Selinsgrove. Could I have a minute of your time?
Today I want to look at not taking God for granted. Hear now Gen 25:34, 34) Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised [his] birthright. Here and in the surrounding verses, we see where Esau gave up his inheritance for a bowel of soup. Everything his father would pass on to him was now forfit. Jesus asks the question “What will man give in exchange for his soul?” God has given man his best in His son Jesus. If we practice sin and turn our back on God, it is at a cost we will one day regret. Don't sell your eternal soul for a moment of pleasure. Be as Moses in Heb 11:25 who chose suffering for a time on earth over the riches of Egypt so that he could partake of the eternal reward of Heaven. Would you like to talk more about God and His wanting you to receive an inheritance of eternal life? - I hope so. 16) Hi! My name is ___________ from the Susquehanna Valley church of Christ in Selinsgrove. Could I have a minute of your time?
Gen 35:10 And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
Israel means "Prince with God". God goes on to tell Jacob to "Be fruitful and multiply" and many nations and kings shall come from him. The name "Israel" becomes synonymous with meaning God's chosen people.
Isa 45:17 reads But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.
Did you know that through Christ we can all be part of God's chosen people? A "spiritual Israel" if you will? The Bible refers to this as "circumcision of the heart" in Rms 2:28-29, and "a new creation" in Gal 6:14-16. Let's discuss this a little further next time we get together.

17) Hi! My name is ___________ from the Susquehanna Valley church of Christ in Selinsgrove. Could I have a minute of your time?
We spoke last time of God changing Jacob's name to Israel in Gen 35:10 and how the Name "Israel" became synonymous with God's chosen people.
Eph 2:11-16[11] Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; [12] That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: [13] But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. [14] For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; [15] Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; [16] And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: The New Covenant ushered in a spiritual Kingdom open to all of mankind who need only submit to the King
